Bank Routing Numbers

The bank routing number is located on the lower left hand corner of your personal checks. What is a bank routing number? Bank routing numbers are assigned to individual banking institutions by the American Bankers Association (ABA). You can do a bank routing number search online if you don’t have one available. This number in conjunction with your account number is the information that is required to remove money from your account via check.

Another use for the routing number is for direct deposit. If your employer offers a direct deposit service and you want the check deposited in your Bank of America account you will have to provide your Bank of America routing numbers. This tells the computer at their bank which bank and account to transfer those payroll dollar into.

If you shop online or with a check by phone you will need to supply your Bank of America routing number or your Chase bank routing number or the routing number of whatever banking institution you use so they can take money out of your account. It works the same way if you pay bills online. When you log onto the website of your telephone service provider, for example, many times you will have the option to pay with a credit card or pay by check. If you choose to pay by check they will have a simple online form to fill out. Sometimes it will save the information and sometimes you will have to resubmit all information every time. In any case they will ask for your bank routing number.

How do I find a bank routing number? Other than looking on your individual check you may find them online. There are a number of resources where you may look at a list of bank routing numbers. For instance, to find a Bangor Savings Bank routing number you could go online to a directory of bank routing numbers and search for Bangor Savings Bank. If you have a routing number and no bank name you could look for a bank routing number listing.

There are many sources to locate free bank routing numbers. If you don’t want to log on to the internet to find one, call your local bank and ask if they offer a bank routing number lookup as a service. Or, it is possible, that you may find that type of information in some of the larger public libraries.

If you are interested in calculating bank routing numbers contact the American Bankers Association for more information on how to do so.
